New Geopolitics of Peace Operations

Together with SIPRI and partners, we launched the final report of the "New Geopolitics of Peace Operations" initiative.

February 9 | New York

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), in collaboration with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in New York, and the Foreign Affairs Ministries of Finland and the Kingdom of the Netherlands launched the final report of the New Geopolitics of Peace Operations III initiative, which focuses on the topic of multilateral peace operations and non-traditional security challenges.

In line with current trends, the New Agenda for Peace, the upcoming Summit of the Future and the recently adopted Security Council resolution on the financing of African Union-led peace support operations, greater attention to the responsibility that partner organizations are taking for peace support and multilateral peace operations is warranted.

At the same time, the context in which multilateral peace operations are conducted are increasingly marked by non-traditional security challenges—terrorism and violent extremism, organized crime, irregular migration and human trafficking, environmental degradation and resources scarcity, and epidemics and pandemics. Such challenges are often of great relevance to the work of multilateral peace
operations, although specific missions themselves may not be the right tool to address them. These challenges and their redress are by definition multidimensional, cross-cutting and often cross-border in character, and therefore require close coordination and cooperation between the UN and different partners in the field.
