Multilateralism 4.0

At a time where the sovereignty of nation-states is undermined in many ways and where, partly in reaction to this, ‘our country first’ nationalistic and autocratic answers are gaining traction, it is time for Multilateralism 4.0. Earlier efforts for multilateral order such as the Conference Diplomacy of the 19th century and the League of Nations could not prevent global catastrophes. "To save succeeding generations from the scourge of war", the United Nations was established as the third, most global and encompassing multilateral structure. But in its current form, this 20th century organization seems ill equipped to deal with the challenges that humanity faces in the 21st century. We envision a reshaped multilateral order in which democracy on the national and the global level are mutually reinforcing, with a reformed, more democratic, well-resourced UN at the center.
